Vol. 191 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - East Cork Flooding.

17.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware of flooding caused by the deposit of silt between Crosshaven and Carrigaline, County Cork: and if he will take steps in consultation with the Cork Harbour Commissioners or otherwise to obviate this flooding which causes grave losses to local people.

The channel mentioned is the estuary of the Owenabuee River which, as stated in reply to a question on the 12th instant, is listed for treatment as a minor catchment in the main arterial drainage programme.

Surely in view of the fact that it is tidal water between Crosshaven and Carrigaline and that the Cork Harbour Commissioners have therefore an interest in it, the matter must be treated in a different way from the ordinary manner of the clearing of a river?

If the Cork Harbour Commissioners wish to have work done there it is a matter for them.

Would it be possible for the Parliamentary Secretary to make inquiries from the Cork Harbour Commissioners as to their responsibilities?

We have made such inquiries and they do not admit any responsibility.
