Vol. 191 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disposal of Millable Wheat.

26.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Agriculture whether any millable wheat was exported to the Six Counties during 1958 and 1959; if so, how much; and whether it was surplus to home requirements.

Approximately 7,000 tons of 1957 crop millable wheat surplus to home requirements were exported to the Six Counties during 1958. No millable wheat was exported to the Six Counties during 1959.

27.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Agriculture whether millable wheat was disposed of by any Government Department or semi-State organisation during 1958, 1959 or 1960; if so, whether tenders were sought for the disposal of such wheat; if not, to whom it was sold; and at what price.

Millable wheat was disposed of through Grain Importers (Éire) Ltd. in 1958. Tenders were sought for wheat disposed of by way of export. The balance of the wheat was sold as follows:—

(a) to all comers, for use as animal feed, at the following successive prices: £26 per ton delivered; £23 per ton delivered; £25 per ton delivered;

(b) to flour millers, at £24 per ton, to permit reduction of the flour extraction rate from 80 per cent. to 72 per cent.;

(c) to flour millers, at £24 per ton, to enable them to supply biscuit flour to the biscuit manufacturers at a price which would enable the latter to compete with imported biscuits.

Millable wheat was not disposed of by any Government Department or semi-State organisation during 1959 or 1960.
