Vol. 191 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mistreatment of Schoolchildren: Holding of Public Inquiries.

28.

asked the Minister for Education whether he has any legal power to hold a public inquiry into alleged mistreatment of children by national school teachers; and, if not, if he proposes to introduce legislation to take this power.

The answer to the first part of the question is "no". In relation to the second part I would refer the Deputy to the statement made by me in this House on the 4th May last.

I have nothing to add to that statement except to say that the present administrative procedure in regard to these inquiries has operated successfully for more than a century and that I am satisfied that it is the procedure best suited to the needs of our system of national education.
