Vol. 191 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dairy Disposal Company: Processing of Milk.

18.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if the Dairy Disposal Co. Ltd. have given consideration to the desirability of following the practice of a number of well-known co-operative dairy societies of processing the greater part of the milk intake of their creameries into products other than butter; and, if so, when it may be expected that the Dairy Disposal Co. will commence such developments, particularly in the Listowel-North Kerry area where the Board operates the largest group of creameries in the country.

The Dairy Disposal Company Ltd. is already engaged in the production of cheese, milk powder, condensed milk and tinned cream, and its policy is to expand the output of such products to the maximum extent practicable.

As regards the Listowel area, a substantial proportion of the milk received by the Company there is resold for the manufacture of chocolate crumb, and it is possible that further quantities will be drawn from it as the Company expands its production of milk powder and cheese.
