Vol. 191 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Utilisation of Sewage as Fertiliser.

20.

asked the Minister for Local Government if the practicability of utilising sewerage from Dublin city as fertiliser has been examined; and, if so, if he will state the conclusions arrived at as a result of that examination.

A Committee set up in 1947 by the then Minister for Local Government to consider the methods of sewage disposal with reference to the recovery of the sludge and its treatment for agricultural purposes reported that the most useful form of sewage sludge for fertilising soils was heat-dried activated sludge but that the estimated cost of its production from Dublin sewage would be out of proportion to its value as a fertiliser.
