Vol. 191 No. 14

Committee on Finance. - Curragh of Kildare Bill, 1961—Money Resolution.

I move:

That it is expedient to authorise such payments out of moneys provided by the Oireachtas as are necessary to give effect to any Act of the present session to make further provision in relation to the Curragh of Kildare and its management and use and for that purpose to repeal the Curragh of Kildare Act, 1868, and part of the Curragh of Kildare Act, 1870.

Could the Minister say what money is expected to be spent under this Bill? What is the necessity for this Money Resolution? I do not see where the Minister's money will come into it unless, of course, the Minister is acceding to my suggestion that he should do something about improving the fertility of the Curragh. In that case plenty of money would be required and expenditure for that purpose would be grand.

When the Curragh is vested I hope to be able to do something in connection with the Deputy's suggestion in regard to the furze.

Has it been decided to spend money on removing the furze?

It has not but, when the Curragh is vested in me, I intend to look into that matter and I hope to be able to do something in connection with it.

Is it the Minister's intention then to spend money removing the scrub and furze around the place?

I am not undertaking to try to raise the fertility of the Curragh, as a whole, but I hope it will be possible to do something to control some, at any rate, of the furze. The suggestion was made on the Second Stage that prior to next year's Derby something might be done in that respect. I hope it will be possible to do something.

One thing we certainly ought to do, if we are going to have a very big Derby, is ensure that visitors will not look at a Curragh which does nothing to enhance our reputation. We ought to provide them with a better appreciation of the way in which we respect and use land.

Question put and agreed to.
Money Resolution reported and agreed to.
