Dáil Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 11 Oct 1961

Vol. 192 No. 1

Motion for Late Sitting.

I want to inquire as to the intentions of the Leaders of the Opposition Parties regarding the conclusion of business tonight. Either we conclude by agreement at 10.30 and go on tomorrow or I shall have to move before 8.30 to sit later.

Deputies

Move.

I move:—

That the Dáil sit later than 11 p.m. today and that the motion for the Adjournment be taken not later than 1 a.m.

Perhaps the Taoiseach would look around and see if anybody wants 2 a.m.

Does anybody want it at 2 a.m.? There is the alternative.

I suggest that you substitute the hour of 2 a.m.

Mr. Ryan

I think there should be no limit on this debate. The guillotine was imposed in a debate before the dissolution with calamitous results and there should be no guillotine on this occasion.

I shall accept the proposition of the Leader of the Deputy's Party.

If we have not finished the business by 2 o'clock we can carry on——

Mr. Ryan

If the Taoiseach consulted properly there would be an opportunity of agreeing.

I must make it clear that I have been consulted in this matter through the ordinary channels and that the Taoiseach has omitted no courtesy in this matter. I understand the Labour Party Whip, the Fine Gael Party Whip and the Government Whip have been in consultation on the matter. I have been kept fully informed.

Motion, as altered, agreed to.

I would ask the House to agree to allow me to use some Deputies as a panel of Chairmen to assist me for the remainder of the sitting.

Agreed.
