Vol. 192 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Legal Minimum Age for Marriage.

35.

asked the Minister for Health whether he will consider introducing legislation to raise the legal minimum age for marriage in this country from its present level at 12 years old for a girl and 14 years old for a boy to at least the level prescribed by Canon Law, as amended in 1918, of 14 years old for a girl and 16 years old for a boy.

The proposal to raise the minimum age for marriage in the State is at present under consideration in my Department. I hope to be in a position, in due course, to submit legislative proposals on the subject.
