Vol. 192 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Removal of Fallen Timber from River Suir.

64.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will give a grant for the removal of fallen timber from the River Suir south of Thurles town, County Tipperary, so as to prevent flooding of property in the vicinity of this river.

It is regretted that a grant cannot be made available from the Vote for Employment and Emergency Schemes as any worthwhile works would be outside the scope of the schemes administered by the Special Employment Schemes Office. The Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, does not provide for the making of grants for works to local authorities. As the Deputy is aware, an engineering survey of the Suir catchment is at present in hands with a view to the carrying out of a comprehensive drainage scheme for the catchment as a whole.

Would a grant under the Local Authorities (Works) Act not suffice?

The Deputy specifically asked me——

He does not specify under what Act.

No. I am not dealing with that question now. It would appear to me that possibly an application to the Department of Local Government for a grant under the Sanitary Services Act might be appropriate to an urban area like Thurles.
