Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coimisiún um Ath-Bheochan na Gaeilge.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he will indicate at what date the report of Coimisiún um Ath-Bheochan na Gaeilge will be published.

2.

asked the Taoiseach when the report of the Commission on the Irish Language will be available.

3.

asked the Taoiseach when he expects that the report of the Commission on the Irish Language will be available.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to take Questions numbers 1 to 3 together.

The Report of the Commission on the Restoration of the Irish Language is in its final drafting stage. I cannot yet indicate the date on which it will be available.

The next general election.

I do not think it will be as quick as all that.

I have been asking this question for nearly a year. The last time I asked the Taoiseach he gave me an undertaking it would be published in August.

I do not think it is correct to say I gave the Deputy an undertaking. I gave the Deputy the Commission's estimate as to when it might produce its report. This is, of course, a voluntary commission and cannot be dragooned by the Government. There is this to be said, that I found on inquiry the Commission were handicapped in the drafting of the report by the fact that their Secretary had been taken for other duties in connection with his official position in the Civil Service. I have now arranged that he will be available whole time to the Commission until their report is completed.

Has there been any progress in this matter since the Taoiseach had occasion to refer to this Commission two weeks prior to the election?

They tell me that they are now in the process of completing the drafting of their report.

I assume that, as the Taoiseach has indicated his intention of adopting our policy in regard to health, in part or in whole, he now intends to adopt our policy in regard to Irish.

They are doing it all the way down. The Minister for Health is on the same line.
