Vol. 192 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Accommodation for Sligo Gardaí.

77.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that some members of the Garda in Sligo town have been unable to get accommodation in the town, while others have their wives and families living in houses which are unfit for human habitation owing to the delay in carrying out reconstruction work on houses by his Department; and, if so, what action he proposes to take in the matter.

Tenders have been invited for the conversion of the former prison officers' cottages at Sligo into married quarters for Gardai. It is hoped that the work will be completed early in 1962.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that several Garda Officers have had to leave Sligo already as a result of the delay? I hope the delay will not be very long because £600 or £700 would complete repairs to two very suitable houses for those Garda officials. I should also like to mention that the accommodation is terribly bad at Manorhamilton——

The Deputy cannot make a speech.

I am not making a speech.

The Deputy must ask a question.

The latest date for the receipt of tenders is the 24th of this month.

Might I ask the Parliamentary Secretary if I would be out of order to state that these three Garda Barracks are in a very bad state of repair?

That will be borne in mind.
