Vol. 192 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Living-out Allowance for Nurses.

2.

asked the Minister for Health whether in view of the serious situation now obtaining at St. Kevin's Hospital, Dublin, he will take steps to ensure that nurses who are not provided with living accommodation will be paid an adequate living-out allowance.

The remuneration of nurses employed by the Dublin Health Authority is a matter in the first instance for that Authority which recently negotiated, with the organisations representative of the nurses, a settlement of the nurses' claims for increased remuneration and improved conditions of service. The offer made by the Health Authority was accepted by the organisations concerned and I have conveyed my sanction.

I should mention that arrangements are in train for early discussion between the union and the chief executive officer of the Health Authority of certain special features peculiar to the nursing service in St. Kevin's.
