Vol. 192 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electoral Law Reform.

99.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he proposes to introduce legislation to give effect to the agreed reports of the Joint Committee on Electoral Law set up to deal with the question of electoral law reform; and, if so, whether it is intended to introduce the proposals in the near future.

100.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he proposes to introduce legislation to implement the Final Report of the Committee on the Reform of Electoral Law; and if he will include in such legislation clear and incontestable power for a Returning Officer to reject a vote at any stage of a count prior to the final declaration of the election of the candidates.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions 99 and 100 together.

Legislation to deal with the outstanding recommendations of the Joint Committee on Electoral Law, one of which bears on the point raised, is under consideration and I shall have it expedited as much as possible. I cannot, however, at this stage give any indication as to when it may be introduced.

May we take it from what the Minister has said that the proposed legislation will in general give effect to the agreed recommendations made by the Electoral Law Reform Committee?

That is a fairly safe assumption.
