Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ireland's Application for EEC Membership.

1.

asked the Taoiseach whether he will make a statement on the progress of Ireland's application for membership of the EEC.

2.

asked the Taoiseach if he will make a statement on the results of his recent discussions at Brussels on the application of this country to join the European Economic Community.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to take Questions Nos. 1 and 2 together.

At the invitation of the Council of the European Economic Community, the Minister for Industry and Commerce and I attended a preliminary meeting in Brussels on the 18th January with representatives of the States members of the Community, at which I made a comprehensive statement concerning our application for membership of the Community. The text of this statement has been published. There was no substantive discussion as the representatives of the Six wished to have time to study the statement. The matter will come before the Council early in March and it was agreed that there will be a further meeting between us and the representatives of the Member States at the end of March or early in April.
