asked the Taoiseach if he will state the effect on the Consumer Price Index of the recent increase in the price of bread.
According to information published in the public press a rise in price of ½d. per 2-lb. loaf was due to take effect as from 20 November, 1961 and a further rise of ¼d. on 15 January, 1962. A Consumer Price Index inquiry was made on 13 November, 1961, before the dates in question, and the subsequent inquiry was in respect of 12 February, 1962. Data from this latter inquiry are not yet available and, therefore, it is not possible to state what change in the average price of the 2-lb. loaf occurred between 13 November, 1961, and 12 February, 1962.
If the published increases amounting to ¾d. were fully effective they would cause a rise of 0.41 of a point in the Consumer Price Index to base August 1947 = 100.
