Vol. 193 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports of Cuban Sugar.

37.

asked the Taoiseach the amount of sugar of Cuban origin imported into this country during the past three months.

No sugar of Cuban origin was imported into the country during the three months November, December, 1961 and January, 1962.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that sugar was sold by President Castro of Cuba to Mr. Khrushchev and it was sent to the Polish port of Gdynia from where it was transhipped to us?

If the Deputy had paid attention to the reply, he would have got the information that no sugar of Cuban origin was imported into this country.

This sugar was of Cuban origin.

It did not get here.

It was brought from Cuba, disguised as Russian or Polish sugar and then sent in here because the Fianna Fáil Government did not want Uncle Sam to know they were running out on him about Mr. Castro. Nobody would be seen dead with the Cuban sugar.

Did the Deputy travel with the sugar?
