Vol. 193 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disabled Persons: Attendance at Rehabilitation Courses.

49.

asked the Minister for Health whether, in the case of disabled persons who are not ordinarily resident in Dublin and are attending rehabilitation training courses in Dublin, he will enable the local authority concerned to make an allowance to the person contributing towards the cost of the disabled person's upkeep while attending the rehabilitation course.

Under Section 41 (1) of the Health Act, 1947, health authorities may make provision for the training and education of persons suffering from or recovering from an infectious disease for employment suitable to their condition of health. The infectious diseases to which this Section applies, at present, are tuberculosis and acute anterior poliomyelitis. A health authority could, therefore, contribute towards the living expenses of a former tuberculosis or poliomyelitis patient, not ordinarily resident in Dublin, during a rehabilitation training course in Dublin.

The making of Regulations under Section 50 (2) of the Health Act, 1953 which would require health authorities to provide a service for the training and placement of other classes of disabled persons is at present under consideration in my Department. I expect that it will be possible to bring these Regulations into force during the course of the next financial year.
