Vol. 193 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Horse Meat Exports to France.

84.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether his attention has been drawn to the statements made by Mr. J.J. Kenny, managing director of the Cahir horse meat factory, on the difficulties in which this industry found itself owing to the limitation by France of the import of Irish horse meat; if so, whether he will make a statement on the negotiations held between the Irish and French Governments on the export of Irish horse meat to France; and if he will state what stage has been reached in these negotiations up to the present.

I am aware of the statements made by Mr. Kenny concerning the position of the Cahir horse meat factory and the importance of securing access to the French market. The import of horse meat to France is subject to quantitative controls. We have been doing all we can to induce the French to provide a quota for our trade and we hope that the talks. which have been proceeding for some time, will be brought to a successful conclusion very soon.
