Vol. 193 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Stock Farm.

85.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether his attention has been drawn to the recent publicity given to the views of cattle experts that Irish cattle stock could best be improved by the setting up of a national stock farm somewhat on the lines of the National Stud; and whether his Department have any plans under consideration for the setting up of such a stock farm.

I have seen a recent newspaper suggestion for the establishment of a national stock farm for pedigree cattle. I consider that the establishment of such a farm, which has previously been discussed with cattle breeding representatives, would not be in the national interest. It is considered that my Department's present policy of purchasing high-class bulls for leasing to private breeders is the best way in which the improvement sought can be achieved.
