Vol. 193 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milling Industry Inquiry.

34.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether in view of recent complaints from farmers on the adjudgement of the millability of wheat and in view of the recent excessive increases in the price of bread he will inquire thoroughly into the workings of the milling industry in this country with a view to ascertaining the desirability or otherwise of nationalising it.

When the question of the nationalisation of the milling industry was debated in the House in November, 1960, I stated that I was of opinion, for reasons which I gave, that nationalisation was not desirable and that it would not result in cheaper flour or bread. I am still of that opinion. I cannot see how nationalisation would solve difficulties connected with the question of the millability of wheat.
