Vol. 193 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wages of Local Government Employees.

37.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether in view of the fact that prior to the issue of Circular No. 76/50 by his Department local government employees were paid on a scale corresponding to the wages paid to building trade employees and that since the issue of this circular the wages of local government employees have been depressed to the level of the lowest possible wages of workers in comparable employment, he will take immediate steps to restore the position which obtained before the issue of this Circular.

Circular Letter E.L./76/50 merely relieved local authorities of the obligation of seeking sanction to variations in the wages of certain categories of employees where their wages did not exceed the wage rates paid locally in what was regarded by the local authority as employment of a comparable nature. The question of restoring the position which obtained before the issue of that Circular Letter does not arise because it did not introduce any changes.
