Vol. 193 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tullamore Housing.

40.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the housing shortage in Tullamore, County Offaly; if he has a proposal for the erection of ten houses in the town; if in view of the fact that there are almost fifty room-dwellers and others who have no houses in the town this proposal will solve the town's urgent housing problem; and if he will make a general survey as to the urgent need in the area without delay.

The assessment of housing needs and the formulation of proposals to meet such needs are primarily matters for the housing authority concerned.

I understand that a number of families in Tullamore need rehousing. I also understand that the housing authority, having considered all the aspects of the situation, including details of the survey carried out at my request, the results of an invitation to those living in unfit and overcrowded conditions to apply for rehousing and the annual vacancy rate arising in the existing estate has decided that a ten-house scheme will meet immediate requirements.

The technical documents in relation to this scheme are awaited.
