asked the Minister for Local Government the total number of local authority pensioners at the latest convenient date, and the total amount paid in pensions for the last twelve months in respect of these pensioners.

According to returns furnished by local authorities the estimated total cost of superannuation payments in respect of the year ended the 31st March, 1961, was £1,355,908 and the average number of persons to whom these payments were made was estimated at 5,860. Such payments include pensions, marriage, death and short service gratuities, lump sum payments and returns of superannuation contributions. Particulars as to the amount for pensions and the number of pensioners are not available.
