Vol. 193 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flooding of Donegal Lands.

50.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that many acres of arable land in the townland of Aghadooey and adjoining townlands in the Ballintra district of South Donegal are being flooded annually; and, if so, if he will make available moneys under the Local Authorities (Works) Act for the drainage of the river which flows through these townlands and thereby enable farmers to take advantage of land reclamation scheme grants to bring back into production portion of the most fertile lands in South Donegal.

There is no information in my Department in regard to flooding in the townlands mentioned by the Deputy. There are no funds at my disposal out of which a grant could be made available for flood relief works in the area in question.

Is the Minister aware this is a highly agricultural district and that there is a considerable amount of flooding at the present time? Could he have the Minister for Finance make funds available to him? Is he further aware that representations have been made to the Parliamentary Secretary to the Taoiseach to have these lands drained and this flooding prevented and, if so, will he make representations to have moneys made available?

What is the name of the river?

Unfortunately, I do not know the name of the river— only the townlands affected. It flows into the sea at Ballintra but I cannot give the Minister the name.
