Vol. 193 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telefís Éireann Reception in Six Counties.

84.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he has power to ensure that residents in Northern Ireland will be enabled to receive Irish Television programmes; and, if so, whether he will take such steps in the matter as are open to him with the least possible delay.

The frequencies and other characteristics of television stations in the European area are the subject of an international agreement made in Stockholm in June, 1961, to which we are a party. In principle the location and power of the transmitters permitted under the agreement are related to the need to provide a domestic service of good quality.

As I said in reply to a previous question, viewers in the Six Counties will receive the Irish television programmes but the quality of reception will vary with the distance from the transmitters and other factors and in general reception will be much the same as the quality of external television transmissions received in the northern half of the State.
