Vol. 193 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo National Schools.

106.

asked the Minister for Education when it is proposed to reconstruct or replace the following national schools in the Erris area of North Mayo; Aughleam, Binghamstown, Corcloch West, Fishing Station and Shanaghy.

107.

asked the Minister for Education when it is proposed to have new national schools erected at Aughaglasheen and Barrack in the Erris Gaeltacht.

A Cheann Comhairle, I propose with your permission to take Questions Nos. 106 and 107 together.

I assume that the school referred to by the Deputy as Binghamstown is Kilmore Erris and that the district referred to as Barrack is Elly Bay.

There are no proposals under consideration in my Department for the reconstruction of any of the schools in question. The present position regarding the erection of new schools is as follows:—

Aughleam—My Department has sanctioned a grant towards the cost of the erection of a new school and working drawings and a specification have been prepared by the Commissioners of Public Works. Certain preliminaries have yet to be completed before the Commissioners will be in a position to invite tenders for the erection of the school.

Kilmore Erris—The Reverend Manager has been asked to obtain a site for a new school to replace the present building but a site has not yet been offered.

Corcloch—A suitable site has been offered for a new school. The Commissioners of Public Works have been asked to prepare sketch plans for the proposed new school.

Fishing Station and Shanaghy— These two schools are to be replaced by a new central school to be erected at Aughaglasheen. I understand that the Commissioners of Public Works are about to place a contract for its erection.

Elly Bay—My Department has sanctioned a grant towards the cost of the erection of a new school at Elly Bay where there is no existing school. I understand that arrangements are being made locally to have a well sunk to provide a water supply for sanitation purposes. When the Commissioners of Public Works are assured that an adequate supply is available, preparation of working drawings and a specification for the new school will be undertaken.
