Vol. 193 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Tax Deductions from Pay of Soldiers Serving in Congo.

22.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the system whereby income tax is deducted from the pay of Irish soldiers at present serving in the Congo; and if he will state whether lump sums of up to £10 are being deducted from the pay of such soldiers.

Members of the Defence Forces, wherever serving, are chargeable to income tax on their ordinary pay. Soldiers serving in the Congo usually allow the whole, or a part, of their pay to accumulate pending their return. When the accumulated pay is being drawn a deduction for income tax is made equal to the total of the deductions which would have been made if the pay had been drawn in the normal way. In such circumstances amounts up to £10 may fall to be deducted in particular cases.
