Vol. 193 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Revenue from Import Tariffs.

29.

asked the Minister for Finance what amount was collected by the Exchequer in import tariffs in each of the years 1957 to 1961 inclusive; whether he has made any estimation of the reduction in this amount which might result from Irish import tariffs being brought into line with those now obtaining within the European Economic Community; and, if so, the amount of this estimated reduction.

I assume the Deputy has in mind tariffs of a protective nature, proceeds from which were approximately as follows:

1957

£2.9 million

1958

£3.3,,

1959

£4.1,,

1960

£4.2,,

1961

£4.7,,

As regards the second part of the Question, no reliable estimate of the effect on this revenue can be made at the present stage in view of the many uncertain factors involved.
