Vol. 193 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Equal Pay Principle in EEC.

4.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Taoiseach whether the principle of equal pay for men and women has been accepted or put into effect in any of the EEC countries.

5.

asked the Taoiseach if membership of the European Economic Community will involve the acceptance of the principle of equal pay for men and women; and, if so, what steps the Government propose to take to implement this principle.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to take Questions Nos. 4 and 5 together.

Membership of the European Economic Community will involve the acceptance of the principle of equal remuneration for equal work as between men and women workers. In advance of the outcome of our negotiations for membership of the Community and until we have had an opportunity, as a member, of a full discussion with the Community Institutions on the question of interpreting the technical details of the application of the principle of equal pay, it is not possible to say what action by the Government will be necessary.

The member states of the Community at the end of last year adopted a resolution designed to secure the progressive application of the principle over the period ending on the 31st December, 1964. A translation of this resolution will be placed in the Library.
