asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he will arrange for modern equipment to be provided in Dublin County exchange areas because many applicants cannot be provided with a telephone service until adequate service facilities are available; and if he will state the number of applicants awaiting service in each of the exchange areas of Swords, Skerries, Balbriggan, Malahide, Clondalkin, Lucan and Tallaght.

Excepting Balbriggan which will be converted to automatic working within the next few months, all the areas mentioned are served by modern automatic exchanges. The connection of new subscribers' telephones to three of these exchanges is being deferred pending the installation of additional exchange equipment within the next few months. The information regarding waiting applicants is contained in a reply to-day to a separate question by the Deputy.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the total number of applicants awaiting provision of a telephone service as at the latest available date, and the number in each exchange area of Dublin County and City.
At the end of January, there was a total of 9,360 applicants waiting for telephone service throughout the country including those in course of installation. As regards the number in each exchange area in Dublin County and in the Dublin City Automatic Area, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate the information in the form of a tabular statement with the Official Report.

NOTE.—The foregoing figures do not include telephones in course of installation in the areas in question of which there were 1,000 approximately on 31st January, 1962.
Is the Minister able to say how many of those 9,000 have been waiting for more than 12 months?
I have not that information with me, but I can get it for the Deputy, if he needs it.
