Vol. 193 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Hygiene Lessons.

118.

asked the Minister for Education if he will arrange for elementary lessons in hygiene to be taught in all schools.

All national teachers are enjoined by the official regulations to cultivate by precept and example habits of personal hygiene amongst their pupils. Furthermore in a special circular issued to Managers and teachers of national schools in 1947 the Minister for Education requested that instruction in health and hygiene should be given to all pupils. Accompanying the circular was a syllabus of health talks prepared by the Irish Red Cross Society.

In Secondary and Vocational Schools instruction in health and hygiene is either given separately or embodied in the instruction in other subjects, particularly, Science and Domestic Science subjects.
