Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grants for Publication of Books in Irish.

119.

asked the Minister for Education the conditions under which grants are made for the preparation and publication of books in Irish, and the amount and purpose of each grant made in the past three years.

The administration of the scheme of State grants towards the publication of books in Irish by independent publishers is entrusted to an independent board, styled "Bord na Leabhar Gaeilge" within the framework of certain conditions. Those conditions prescribe, inter alia, that a grant is payable in any financial year only in respect of original books and dramas published for the first time during the period from 1st January immediately preceding the commencement of that financial year and ending on the following 31st December, and which are considered by the Board to be of a high standard and a worthy contribution to modern Irish literature. The following are the grants paid to the Board during the past three years:-

1959/60

£7,504

1960/61

£8,418

From 1/4/61 to date

£10,542
