Vol. 193 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Jury Service Liability.

130.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will alter the regulations for jury service in the Dublin district to provide that only those with a valuation of £30 or over are liable for such service.

I am not prepared to accept the Deputy's suggestion. The present rating qualification for jury service in Dublin is £18, and produces about 21,000 jurors, each of whom is required to serve once every three years. The effect of raising the rating qualification to £30 would be to reduce the number of jurors to about 6,000, each of whom would have to serve more frequently than once a year. Apart from other considerations, I would not favour a change which would result in increasing substantially the frequency of jury service.
