Vol. 193 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Sea Wall.

8.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will sanction a minor relief grant for the erection of a sea wall at Magheraroarty, Gortahork, County Donegal, in order to prevent houses, particularly that of Mrs. McFadden, from being flooded.

The construction of coast protection works is outside the scope of the minor schemes carried out by the Special Employment Schemes Office. If, however, the Deputy has in mind a smaller scheme about which he previously made representations, serving the houses and lands of John McFadden, Sarah McGowan and William Gallagher, consisting of the repair of the approach road, the cleaning of the side drain, and the repair and extension of the retaining and parapet wall along the roadside, the applicants refused a favourable offer of grant made to them under the Rural Improvements Scheme on 16th June, 1955. If the applicants are now prepared to make a contribution to the cost of this work, and will so inform the Office, the case will be reopened. This work could not be considered for a free Minor Development Scheme grant as the operations on the drain and the retaining wall could not be carried out satisfactorily during the winter months.
