Vol. 193 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Temporary Building Inspectors.

53.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (1) the number of temporary building inspectors appointed by him since 1st April 1961 and the date on which each was appointed, (2) the number of applications received for each such position, (3) the number of applicants interviewed for each, and (4) the qualifications necessary to be called for interview.

Temporary posts of building inspectors in my Department were advertised in the daily press on 8th and 9th December, 1961, and 269 applications were received. A selection board set up in my Department, on the basis of the general qualifications and experience of the applicants as set out on their application forms, selected 75 applicants who appeared likely to be the most suitable. These were called for interview and 41 attended. As a result of the competition, 17 candidates were offered employment and 15 have accepted and will take up duty on 5th March.

In addition one retired local authority official, who had been engaged prior to retirement on duties corresponding to those of building inspector, was, prior to the issue of the advertisement, given employment as a building inspector for a period of two months.
