Vol. 193 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Forestry Development in North Mayo.

88.

asked the Minister for Lands if he has received any offers of land for forestry development in the Achill and Ballycroy areas of County Mayo: and what steps have been taken for the development of forestry in these areas.

The Achill area has been inspected on a number of occasions by my Department and it is considered to be generally unsuitable for forestry development because of severe exposure to Atlantic gales.

In the Ballycroy area my Department has agreed to purchase an area of almost 2,300 acres at Glennamong and it is expected that the sale of this area will be closed in the near future. A number of other areas have been inspected in the Ballycroy district in recent years but they were found on inspection to be unsuitable for planting.
