Vol. 193 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Common Market: Outlook for Beef Producers.

29.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether it is a fact that the outlook for beef producers is particularly promising in the Common Market.

Projections of supply and demand made by the European Economic Community some time ago indicated that the outlook for beef production in the Six member countries was favourable. The entry of Britain, Denmark and Ireland to the Common Market would, of course, affect the position but, in general, the indications are that there should be a reasonably good demand for high class beef.

In view of the fact that livestock production has risen in these six countries by over 8 per cent. between 1960 and 1961 and that the French are supposed to have a surplus of beef, does the Minister not consider that the position is not as rosy as some of his junior Ministers would paint it at the moment throughout the country?

I have conveyed to the Deputy the information that is available to me as a result of inquiries objectively carried out.

I do not know what the Minister means by the word "objectively".
