Vol. 193 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Law Reform Proposals.

43.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether any proposals of law reform are contemplated by him in relation to the work of his Department; and, if so, the nature of such proposals, and the probable date when legislation implementing them will be introduced.

My Department is at present engaged in the consideration of proposals for the revision and codification of merchant shipping legislation. The first part of this programme has been dealt with in the Mercantile Marine Act, 1955, which covers the ownership and registration of Irish ships. Because of the many problems involved in the revision and codification of the remaining body of law relating to merchant shipping and the wide field covered by the existing code, it would not be possible for me at this stage to indicate the probable date when implementing legislation will be introduced.
