Vol. 193 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of German National.

56.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether permission has been given to a German land owner who has bought an estate in County Wicklow (name supplied) to employ a German national as a land steward at £4 per week, indoor; and why this permission was granted in view of the objection made by the Federation of Rural Workers and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.

A permit has not been granted in this case. I have the matter still under consideration and will communicate my decision to the Deputy in the very near future.

Is the Minister aware that his Department has notified my trade union that the permit has been granted ?

My Department notified the trade union that it was proposed to grant the permit, notwithstanding objections made by the trade union on certain grounds. Those grounds were limited to the amount of wages proposed to be paid to aliens. Subsequent to that, the Deputy's trade union raised other questions and these other questions are now being considered.
