Vol. 193 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Surveys.

27.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will list the local authorities who have completed their survey of housing requirements; and indicate how many have submitted recommendations on (a) housing needs and (b) projected legislation.

As the reply to the first part of the question is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report. As regards the second part of the question, the extent of the housing need arising from the unfit housing problem is indicated by the returns submitted in each case.

In submitting the survey results, a number of housing authorities have made recommendations, some of which, if implemented, might require amending legislation. I am having these recommendations examined at present.

The statement is as follows:—

asked the Minister for Local Government on what date he issued his request to Dublin Corporation for a survey of their housing needs; what reply, if any, he has received from the Corporation; and if, as a result of such survey, he can offer any hope of amelioration of the housing situation in Dublin in the near future, having regard to the large numbers of people in the city who are in urgent need of adequate housing.

Housing authorities generally were requested by circular letter of 14th May, 1960, to undertake a survey of unfit housing in their areas. Dublin Corporation had already carried out a comprehensive survey on its own initiative, the results of which have been furnished to my Department and have been the subject of detailed examination and discussion. The housing situation in Dublin City is the subject of regular review by the Corporation and by my Department. I am informed that at the 31st December last there were 8,517 applications for housing accommodation on the waiting list, almost 60 per cent. of which were from families of three persons or less including 1,252 from single persons. The Corporation have made arrangements to expand their current building programme.

29.

asked the Minister for Local Government the date on which each housing authority in County Wexford was requested to furnish to him a survey of the housing needs in its respective area; and what progress has been made by each authority to date.

Each housing authority was requested by circular letter of the 14th May, 1960, to survey all unfit housing in its area.

The survey has been completed by the Urban District Councils of Enniscorthy and New Ross and by the Town Commissioners of Gorey. Pilot surveys in selected areas were carried out by the county council in order to give me an advance estimate of the extent of unfit housing in the county health district. I am informed that the detailed survey has reached an advanced stage and should soon be completed in the county health district and that a similar position obtains in the borough of Wexford.

Questions Nos. 30 and 31 postponed.
