Vol. 193 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of Land by Non-Nationals.

42.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Lands the total acreage of land purchased by non-nationals since the introduction of the land register to help supervise such activities.

The total area purchased by non-nationals, as recorded in the register kept by the Land Commission under the procedure authorised by Sections 33, 34 and 35 of the Finance Act, 1961, and upon which the 25% duty has been paid, is 2,192 acres comprising 37 properties some of which are small units.

In addition to the foregoing, 451 acres comprising 32 transactions, were acquired for industrial purposes and 877 acres, comprising seven transactions, were acquired for other purposes but exempted from duty under the relevant exemption sections of the Finance Act, 1961.

Does that figure include all land purchased by non-nationals in the guise of companies or in any other capacity?

So far as I am aware, the figure includes every type of purchase of land by non-nationals.

(South Tipperary): Do I understand that figure applies back only to last August?

The Deputy is to understand it applies back to the date of the last Finance Act, the beginning of last August.
