Vol. 193 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telefís Éireann Masts.

63.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why Irish steel was not utilised for television masts by Telefís Éireann; if he will state the cost of the imported masts; and why a suitable design could not be produced in this country.

This question relates to a contract which was placed by the Broadcasting Authority. I have no function in the matter.

Was it not possible to have the engineers design masts so that Irish steel could be used instead of imported steel?

Irish firms were invited to tender for the masts.

Did not Irish steel firms tender?

It is a matter for the Authority and I am precluded from interfering. The Broadcasting Authority Act gives the Authority power to make contracts, agreements and arrangements incidental or conducive to the objects of the Authority.

Surely the Minister realises the necessity of cutting out unnecessary imports and is not this a case where we imported a large quantity of steel for television masts when the steel could have been manufactured in our own country and of a quality equally as good as the imported steel?

The Deputy is raising other matters in relation to the question but if they were investigated it might not confirm that what he says is true.

Question No. 64 postponed.
