Vol. 193 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Scholarship Examinations.

65.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that county council scholarship examinations and Scoláireacht na Gaeltachta examinations are held on the same day in Easter week; and that students are therefore unable to sit for both examinations; and if he will endeavour to have them held on different days, or alternatively have one examination suffice for both scholarships, as the standards of examination are similar.

At present separate examinations are held for the county council scholarships and for the Department's Gaeltacht scholarships, as the former examination is based on the programme for the 6th standard for National schools and the latter on the programme for 7th standard.

As has already been announced to managers and principal teachers and to County and Borough Councils, as from 1963 onwards, the competition for both sets of scholarships will be based on the programme for the 6th standard. Accordingly, only one examination will be held at which eligible candidates may compete for the two types of scholarship.
