Vol. 193 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teaching of Art.

71.

asked the Minister for Education whether, in view of the strictures made on the teaching of art in this country by the Scandinavian design group in their recent report, his Department will take steps to make a survey of the present position of the teaching of art in Irish schools generally with a view to encouraging more schools to employ fully qualified art teachers, and to discouraging the present practice of teaching mechanical drawing rather than a more broadly based course in art in secondary schools.

The present position of the teaching of art in secondary schools has been examined by the Council of Education. The Council's report will be published very shortly and considered by the various educational bodies concerned.

72.

asked the Minister for Education the number of secondary schools recognised by his Department in which a qualified full-time teacher of art is employed; and the number of such schools in which a qualified full-time teacher of art is not employed.

Of the 540 recognised secondary schools there are full-time qualified teachers of art in fourteen and in 318 there are part-time art teachers who must satisfy the Department's inspector that they are competent to give efficient instruction in art or drawing subjects.

73.

asked the Minister for Education the number of secondary schools recognised by his Department which entered candidates for the subject art in (a) the Intermediate Certificate and (b) the Leaving Certificate in the years 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960 and 1961.

The answer is in the form of a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:
