Vol. 193 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ban Gharda Recruitment.

100.

asked the Minister for Justice if he considers that the Ban Gharda scheme has been successful; and, if so, if he intends to step up recruitment so as to have Ban Ghardaí eventually attached to all stations.

Yes; the Ban Ghardaí have been a success. It is proposed to recruit more during the coming year and they will be assigned to wherever their services will be most valuable. It is not intended, however, to assign Ban Ghardaí to every station.

Is the Minister aware of a recent statement that quite a number of the Ban Ghardaí will marry this year? That being the case, does it not demonstrate that good-looking Ban Ghardaí should not, in the public interest, be recruited?

The qualifications and specifications of applicants for admission to the Ban Ghardaí are matters for the Civil Service Commission.

The Minister might insert a condition of horrible aspectu?

I would not be a judge.
