Vol. 193 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prison Service Officers.

102.

asked the Minister for Justice what precautions are taken to ensure that recruits to the prison service are temperamentally suited to this kind of employment.

The recruitment of established prison officers is made through the medium of the Civil Service Commission. Officers are appointed on probation for a period of two years, and while on probation are under the continual scrutiny of their superiors and assigned to a variety of duties to test their suitability. No officer is retained permanently unless his superiors are satisfied that he is temperamentally suited to the prisons service.
