Vol. 193 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post Office Savings Bank Reorganisation.

5.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider reorganising the Post Office Savings Bank so as to provide the equivalent of a banking service for its customers.

It is assumed that the Deputy has in mind the provision of cheque facilities for depositors in the Post Office Savings Bank. This Bank is essentially a deposit Bank for the promotion of saving, and the provision of a cheque service by it would mean a major change in its status and would require enabling legislation. No such reorganisation is contemplated at present.
