Vol. 194 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - South West Cork Storm Damage.

41.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether in respect of the damage caused by the recent storm in the South West Cork area he will (a) make special grants available for the repair of houses, (b) provide sufficient and adequate funds for the local authority to enable them to immediately deal with the question of collapsed roads, and (c) make available funds to deal with breaches in the sea walls in the affected areas.

As regards part (a) of the Question, there is provision in the Housing Acts for the making of grants for the repair of houses damaged by storm. The position in regard to (b) is that while special grants cannot be made available to meet the cost of necessary repair and reconstruction works, road authorities may propose the execution of such works under their existing Road Fund allocations in appropriate cases. As regards (c) there are no funds at my disposal out of which financial assistance could be given for the repair of breaches in sea walls.
