Vol. 194 No. 6

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take business as set out on the Order Paper in the following order: Nos. 1, 2, 5, 4, and in No. 4, Vote 46. Questions will be taken at 3 p.m.

I wonder could the Taoiseach give any indication of the programme of legislation the Government have in mind, because it is time now for us to make up our minds whether we will dispose of the Estimates and the financial business and then sit until the end of August to deal with important Bills.

I do not think it would be feasible to draw up an exclusive list of legislation and say that nothing else would be undertaken. It may be possible to give an indication of the Bills which will certainly be taken, but not to the exclusion of any others.

Reasonable attention should be given to this matter. I do not think it desirable that we should have to scramble through important Bills at the end of the month of August when the Dáil is jaded and legislation does not get the consideration to which it is entitled. What is urgent must be done, and what is not urgent could be left to the autumn to be dealt with, with calm deliberation, by whatever Government are then in office.

We can review the situation some time later in the session.
