Vol. 194 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cigarette Smoke in Theatres and Cinemas.

15.

asked the Minister for Health whether, since cigarette smoking is now believed to be a dangerous poison causing cancer of the lungs, he intends to take such steps as are needed to prevent innocent non-smokers from being subjected to concentrated exposure to carcinogenic smoke in cinemas and theatres.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply I gave yesterday to the Question put by Deputy Barron regarding air pollution caused by tobacco smoking in enclosed places of public entertainment. In that reply I stated that there is no medical evidence as yet that the presence of tobacco smoke in the atmosphere of such places constitutes a danger to health.

I might mention, also, that no Minister has the power to do as the Deputy suggests.
